The collaboration between Czech architecture studio KOGAA and the South Moravian Innovation Center has resulted in the transformation of an existing city property into the new headquarters for the Institute. Situated in Brno’s technological park, the project marks KOGAA’s second retrofit endeavor in the city.
Reimagining Workspace Dynamics
The revamped facility now serves as a hub for an open innovation ecosystem, catering to successful entrepreneurs in the region. Originally housed in a laboratory space, the headquarters underwent a significant overhaul to adapt to evolving work models emphasizing openness and collaboration. KOGAA’s expertise in alternative retrofit workspaces was instrumental in reimagining the office environment to foster creativity and interaction while ensuring sustainability.
Innovative Design Solutions
The traditional layout characterized by fixed enclosing walls gave way to transparent organic forms, facilitating collaborative meetings and private workstations. Embracing sustainable practices, existing furniture, lighting, and floor finishes were retained wherever possible. A glass partition was introduced to separate the upper and ground floors, minimizing heat loss while enhancing spatial connectivity.
Expressive Elements
An iconic installation on the ground floor serves as a welcoming gesture, reflecting the identity of JIC and engaging with the surrounding space. A dynamic lighting fixture casts vibrant colors throughout the day, visually uniting the different levels. Red tones dominate the ‘active’ workspaces, fostering idea exchange and communication, while cooler tones promote focus and concentration in designated office areas.
Harmonizing Colors and Materials
A strategic use of color distinguishes various zones within the headquarters, with yellow and orange hues signaling areas for focused meetings. Primal materials such as glazed partitions and powder-coated metal sheets shape the spatial dynamics, complemented by the versatility of plexiglass for curved elements. Soft furnishings like curtains and carpets not only enhance comfort but also contribute to the organic design language envisioned for the retrofit.
The JIC HQ stands as a testament to the transformative power of adaptive reuse, breathing new life into existing urban spaces while promoting innovation and sustainability.
