By Introduction
The Toyo University Ai-House Hub-4, designed by Ishimoto Architectural, serves as an international student dormitory catering to approximately 300 students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Established as part of Toyo University’s initiative for internationalization, the dormitory aims to promote cultural exchange and collaboration among Japanese and international students.
Site Integration
Situated adjacent to the Toyo University Akabanedai Campus, the dormitory harmonizes with the surrounding topography, leveraging the natural elevation difference of approximately 4 meters within the site. The irregular polygonal plan shape of the building aligns with the site contours, minimizing the visual impact on the surrounding residential area. Special attention was given to mitigating external factors such as shading, noise, and peer pressure, ensuring a positive living environment for both residents and neighbors.
Interior Design
The interior design focuses on creating a vibrant and inclusive community space where students can interact and socialize. A figure-8 configuration connects the interior spaces, forming a continuous layout that encourages movement and interaction. Shared facilities such as study rooms, studios, kitchen counters, and a cafeteria promote various scales and types of interactions among residents.
Common Spaces
Shared spaces are strategically distributed throughout the dormitory, fostering a sense of community and belonging. Living infrastructure such as toilets, showers, washbasins, and kitchens are centrally located, serving multiple dormitory rooms. Additionally, study rooms, tatami corners, and small living spaces are interspersed in the common areas, creating pathways with abundant natural light and ventilation.
Innovative Design Approach
The dormitory adopts a hybrid approach, combining the efficiency of traditional “private room type” dormitories with the community-oriented “unit-based type.” Each group of dormitory rooms shares living infrastructure, promoting interaction and collaboration while allowing free access to shared facilities. This design encourages students to form connections and friendships across different cultural and social backgrounds.
