By Concept and Purpose
The Soiva Building, designed by Tommila Architects, stands as a testament to its name, meaning resonant or musical. It serves as a vibrant hub for musical education, housing two music schools dedicated to teaching rhythmic and classical music. From playschool for children to education for amateur and professional students, the building caters to a diverse range of individuals interested in instrumental and vocal music, as well as music technology and production.
Architectural Integration
In close collaboration with the users, Tommila Architects meticulously organized the building to accommodate visiting audiences and regular users alike. Across five stories, all spaces are interconnected via a central atrium, fostering a sense of unity and connectivity. The ground floor lobby, acting as both a foyer and a communal space, features dark colors and earthy textures, creating a contrast with the brighter and cozier upper floors.
Multifunctional Spaces
Lounges and rehearsal rooms span over the atrium, creating a multifaceted common area flooded with natural light. This layout encourages casual interactions and fosters a shared sense of community between the two music schools. Learning spaces are strategically positioned around the building’s perimeter, offering ample daylight and panoramic views. The sound-proofing design ensures a noiseless environment conducive to studying music while maintaining a serene atmosphere.
Innovative Design Features
The basement houses cavernous studios ingeniously designed to accommodate recording, monitoring, and editing rooms. This innovative layout allows for simultaneous use in various combinations, setting new standards in pedagogy. Additionally, concerts held in the performance halls above can be seamlessly recorded in the basement studios. The facades and interiors pay homage to different music genres, with black brickwork evoking the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll and brass accents reminiscent of classical instruments.
Cultural Integration
Located adjacent to the historic ceramic factory of Arabia, the Soiva Building embraces its cultural heritage while embodying modern design principles. It forms part of a creative studies campus within the refurbished factory, sharing facilities and fostering collaboration among diverse disciplines. Tommila Architects’ holistic approach extends beyond individual buildings, having designed the entire campus to promote creativity, innovation, and cultural exchange.
