Location and Context

Situated on the Aubergenville plateau overlooking the Seine near Mantes-la-Jolie, the Vincent Van Gogh high school serves as a prominent fixture amidst fields, suburban areas, and a large social housing complex. Originally designed by architect Jean-François Laurent and inaugurated in 1991, the school has been subject to recent redevelopment efforts.

Design Concept

Atelier O-S Architectes embarked on the project to restructure the catering service at Van Gogh High School. The endeavor aimed to integrate new elements seamlessly with the existing building while enhancing functionality and spatial quality. Key themes included access and organization, rationalization of space, and optimization of natural light.

Extension and Rationalization

The project involved creating a new habitable thickness around the existing building, extending it by 2 meters. This extension facilitated better access for students, enhanced circulation, and provided additional surface area. A new glass facade on the forecourt offered transparency and visual connections while optimizing natural light intake.

Spatial Organization

The catering service’s layout prioritized efficiency and flexibility. The kitchen, preparation, and storage areas were strategically positioned on the west facade, optimizing logistical flow. A spacious dining room with ample natural light served as a multifunctional space, accommodating various activities and configurations.

Integration of Light

Natural light played a central role in the project, with efforts made to maximize its presence throughout the dining area. Large glazed facades on the east and west sides allowed sunlight to penetrate deeply into the space. An active ceiling system with integrated lighting further enhanced the ambiance, providing both illumination and acoustic control.

Energy Efficiency

Efforts to improve energy efficiency included exterior insulation to eliminate thermal bridges and restructuring the roof to address leaks. Underfloor heating was proposed for the dining rooms, ensuring comfortable temperatures throughout. These enhancements aimed to create a more sustainable and comfortable environment for students and staff.

The restructured catering service at Van Gogh High School represents a harmonious blend of modern design and functional efficiency. By seamlessly integrating new elements with the existing structure and prioritizing spatial quality and natural light, the project revitalizes the school’s catering facilities while enhancing the overall learning environment.
