Rethinking Workspaces: KYOYA Office by SAKUMAESHIMA

The KYOYA Office project by SAKUMAESHIMA involved the interior design for the relocation of KYOYA Corporation’s new office building. Founded in 1928, KYOYA Corporation specializes in promotion, interior design, and display services. Situated in an area near JR Harajuku Station, the project repurposed an existing building originally serving as a vocational school into office space, a showroom, and rental space.

Utilizing Existing Structure

The building, comprising one basement floor and three stories above ground, features two entrances: one leading to the showroom and rental space in the basement, and the other providing access to meeting areas on the first floor. Despite the presence of a south-facing opening, upper floors receive more natural light due to surrounding buildings. The basement, devoid of natural light, features granite flooring. Curtain rails were strategically installed to allow flexible use of the space while maintaining its unique ambiance.

Design Elements and Functionality

The key color palette revolves around silver, chosen for its versatility and ability to maintain a light atmosphere. The second and third floors primarily serve office functions, with large tables arranged to accommodate the layout of each floor, facilitating the work style desired by each department. Tables and fixtures are crafted from linden plywood, blending functionality with aesthetics.

Integration of Natural Light

On the first floor, the wooden deck at the entrance was replaced with a sliding glass door, allowing natural light to penetrate deeper into the space. A conference room, separated by a glass partition, occupies the central area, offering flexibility in meeting locations based on confidentiality levels. Additionally, the area at the far end can be partitioned with curtains, serving as a multipurpose space for work, meetings, or storage.

The KYOYA Office renovation project exemplifies a thoughtful approach to workspace design, combining functionality, flexibility, and aesthetics to create an inviting and productive work environment.
