By The Makao Workshop, designed by Ateliers AUAV, is a 500 m2 space located near Place de la République in Paris. It is intricately linked with the Béranger apartment project, both undertaken by the same agency. The owners sought a location in central Paris that could accommodate both their family and their company’s offices.
Architectural Context
Situated within a paved courtyard characteristic of the Marais district, the Makao project involved the complete renovation of a historic building. The workshop, constructed around the 1900s, features a metal and wood frame with brick filling, showcasing remarkable construction techniques of its time. Adjacent to the workshop is an apartment on the ground floor, connected by a sloped roof.
Design Challenge
The project faced a dual challenge: to uncover the authenticity and structural integrity of the site, which had been obscured by time and previous alterations, and to seamlessly integrate the two distinct volumes into a cohesive space.
Architectural Solution
A key architectural intervention involved transforming the apartment volume into a glass-roofed area, flooding the workspace with natural light. This not only illuminates the ground floor level but also brightens the semi-buried manufacturing workshops.
