Design Philosophy
The UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios embodies a vision of community and creativity, blending traditional studio spaces with modern amenities to meet the evolving needs of artistic practice. Drawing inspiration from urban planning principles, the design integrates communal areas with private studios, offering a blank canvas for artistic exploration.
Comprehensive Renovation
With a focus on inclusivity, the project aimed to accommodate various disciplines within the Master of Fine Arts program. Through cohesive renovation and expansion efforts, the facility now houses ceramics, interdisciplinary studio, new genres, painting and drawing, photography, and sculpture departments. The building features artist studios, lab spaces, a gallery, classroom, and shared exhibition areas, fostering collaboration and exchange.
Architectural Strategies
The design leverages the industrial warehouse vernacular, employing four key strategies: removing obsolete structures, establishing a continuous ground plane, expanding the roof, and enhancing the perimeter enclosure. These interventions create fluid program boundaries and integrate the existing and new structures, forging a cohesive identity for the program.
Sustainable Practices
In line with environmental responsibility, the project achieved LEED Gold certification by implementing innovative sustainable strategies. Thick walls minimize the need for additional insulation and waterproofing, reducing construction waste. Covered, unconditioned work yards and gardens harness natural daylight and passive ventilation, promoting energy efficiency and fostering a connection with the temperate Southern California climate.
Communal Spaces
Central to the design are shared urban spaces, including galleries, labs, and outdoor yards, fostering a sense of community and encouraging artistic production. The entrance garden, shaded by Acacia trees, serves as a gathering space for students, marking a new chapter in the history of UCLA Arts in Culver City.
Conclusion
The UCLA Margo Leavin Graduate Art Studios stands as a testament to thoughtful design and sustainable innovation, providing a dynamic environment for artistic expression and collaboration. By embracing principles of inclusivity and environmental stewardship, the facility embodies the spirit of creativity and community, enriching the educational experience for students and faculty alike.
