Audi India Pursues Local Production of EVs

Luxury automaker Audi India is gearing up to initiate local assembly of electric vehicles (EVs), a strategic move aimed at making its models more accessible to customers in the Indian market. Presently, Audi imports its entire EV range, including models like Q8 50 e-tron, Q8 55 e-tron, Q8 Sportback 50 e-tron, Q8 Sportback 55 e-tron, e-tron GT, and RS e-tron GT, into the country.

Transitioning to Local Assembly

While Audi currently assembles petrol models such as Q3, Q3 Sportback, Q5, Q7, A4, and A6 at its manufacturing plant in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, it is actively pursuing local manufacturing of EVs. Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head of Audi India, affirmed ongoing discussions with Audi AG, the global headquarters, regarding the local assembly of EV models. Although no specific timeline was shared, Dhillon expressed optimism about reaching a resolution in the near future.

Potential Impact and Expansion Plans

Dhillon emphasized the importance of the next 2-3 years (2024-2026) for the EV market, foreseeing the introduction of various electric models across different price points. Audi India aims to broaden its customer base by offering EVs at more competitive price points. Currently, Audi’s EV lineup in India caters to a niche market segment due to its premium pricing.

Regulatory Environment and Sales Outlook

India’s customs duty system imposes substantial tariffs on imported cars, including EVs, to incentivize domestic manufacturing. Audi’s decision to introduce multiple electric models aligns with global trends towards electrification. The company anticipates electric vehicles to contribute significantly to its sales, targeting 50% of its sales from EVs by 2030.

Introduction of Q6 e-tron

Audi’s recent global premiere of the Q6 e-tron marks a significant milestone in its electric mobility journey. The Q6 e-tron, based on the Premium Platform Electric (PPE), boasts a range of up to 625 kilometers and represents Audi’s commitment to delivering premium electric mobility solutions. Scheduled for release in various global markets this year, the Q6 e-tron is expected to launch in India in early 2025, further enhancing Audi’s presence in the country’s electric vehicle market.

Future Prospects with PPE

Gernot Dollner, Chairman of the Board of Management at Audi AG, highlighted the scalability of electric mobility facilitated by the PPE. This platform enables Audi to introduce high-volume electric models across different segments, setting the stage for a sustainable and electrified future.
