Location and Context
Situated within Youlan Middle School, approximately one kilometer from the 120th Division School in Xingxian County, Shanxi Province, the Tuyi Building stands as a beacon of innovative design. The site’s topography, with a 6-meter height difference between the north and south, inspired the architects to create a structure that harmonizes with the surrounding mountain villages.
Design Concept
The Tuyi Building serves as a fusion of functionality and aesthetics, blending seamlessly into the landscape while providing an inspiring educational environment. To achieve this, the architects extended folded walls along the natural terrain, creating a multi-level space that encourages exploration and interaction.
Integrated Spaces
The interior and exterior spaces of the building are intertwined, offering diverse communication areas for both teachers and students. The strategic placement of classrooms, libraries, art studios, and exhibition halls between the folded walls creates a dynamic layout where buildings and courtyards alternate, fostering a sense of community and connectivity.
Dynamic Architecture
The continuous winding wall acts as a guiding element, leading occupants through different indoor scenes reminiscent of a village. The design intentionally obscures the view of the entire building from within, allowing people to experience diverse perspectives and vistas as they traverse the space, akin to unfolding a picturesque scroll.
Natural Light and Texture
Skylights embedded along the concrete folded walls provide ample natural light, creating tranquil reading and display areas while minimizing heat loss in the cold climate. The coarse wood texture of the walls complements the rugged beauty of the surrounding mountains, ensuring harmony between the built environment and its natural setting.
Conclusion
The Tuyi Building of Youlan Middle School stands as a testament to innovative design principles that prioritize functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. By embracing the local landscape and architectural heritage, this educational facility not only provides a conducive learning environment but also celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of its surroundings.
